The striped Breton
shirt originated in Brittany, France in 1858. It was created to be able to spot
overboard sailors and initially designed to feature 21 stripes, one for each of
Napoleon’s victories.
In 1917, Coco Chanel
introduced the pattern to the fashion world in her nautical collection after
being inspired by sailors during a visit to the French coast.
The style has since
then been recreated in a countless amount of ways and is a classic staple piece
in many a wardrobe.
