So I finally found myself a decent pair of denim overalls. Work had to be done like tapering the wide leg a tad, distressing the denim at the knees and around the pockets to give the worn in look, and hemming the bottom to avoid having such a huge cuff when rolled. Didn't take too much time but wouldn't have mattered anyway seeing as I paid these $5.99!!! Ok, you can pick up your jaw from the floor now :) The top I'm wearing is also from the same thrift shop and was a mere $2.99. It was a t-shirt which I just cut off the sleeves and sewed a hem to make neat.
You see, no need to spend a fortune to stay on trend. Just follow these simple guidelines for shopping at thrift stores.
- Bring cash. Many thrift stores don't take credit/debit.
- As a mom, here's the most important tip...Keep the kiddos at home!! Thrift shopping takes time and patience to sift through rows and rows of sardine packed racks.
- Bring a list or pictures of what you're looking for so you don't aimlessly waist your time searching through racks and buying things that you'll never wear.
- Keep an open mind and don't look for a specific piece. Think creatively. You want a sleeveless blazer but can't find one anywhere? Buy a regular blazer and cut off the sleeves.
- Don't limit yourself. Shop the mens section as well. My t-shirt now tank top was found in the mens section size small.
- Try it on! Bigger is always better as you can have it taken in.
- Examine the piece carefully for unwanted rips, holes, stains,
- Wash the pieces before wearing. Was not sure if I should write this for obvious reasons but you never know. Ewe!
- Go often! Don't get discouraged if you don't find what you're looking for. Some stores get new items daily. Ask them how often and which days they receive merchandise.
And there are my tips for a successful thrift store shopping trip.
Do you guys have any tips to share?

The overalls look quite flattering on you and I like how you rolled them up at the bottom.
Now about thrift shopping: I am thinking this is something I want to try.

@Helen: The best and probably the only store I go to is Value Village. Prices are affordable. There's many vintage shops on St-Laurent corner Mont-Royal, there's the shop Eva B, the Mile-End district has many stores, however I find they are all too expensive for me.
