ballet

10.24.2011

Just to follow-up, my ballet classes are going great. I think I've improved tremendously since the first day I started this past summer. Things I need to work on...grand jete's & deboule's...I suck at them and it's frustrating! Any ballerina's out there have any pointers for me?
Here's a pic from tonight's class. When I first started this summer, I could barely straighten my leg to the front. Hopefully by the end of this session i'll be able to lift it straight up.

Hey pretty lady! I am vicariously living through you right now. I grew up doing ballet, but I never realized how expensive classes are so I have to wait till I get a big girl job (I graduated in May and still working the same job from college). I could give you pointers though. Gran Jetes I don't do so hot, because I'm not flexible. So stretch and work work work at the bar to strengthen that muscle. Practice doing a normal jete forward and hold your leg there up high. Then transfer your weight to the front leg and stand in arabesque plie. That's how its suppose to look in slow motion. Now just do it quick and with a little jump ;) Deboules on the other hand is all about spotting and keep a strong second arm. If it gets limp then you get limp. Also remember to keep your steps at 180 degrees then the next another 180 degrees if you want to go straight. If you go over 180 in your first step then your turns will start heading towards the back of the room. Hope this helps. Demonstration is always waaaaayyy easier.

@ seamlesslove: OMG, thank you so much!! I will definitely remember your tips during my next class and will practice at home.
Seeing as you've done ballet all your life, are you able to get a part-time job at a studio teaching beginner children?

I've been thinking of starting ballet classes myself. You've just inspired me... any pointers?

Lena Antonacci said...

@ gracie: I'm far from a good ballerina therefore the only pointer I have for you is to just have fun. I love it so much that my class goes by in the blink of an eye and I only realize then that I just worked out for 1hr.
My body looks so much better since I started and I feel great.
You will enjoy it so much :)

Love this post! I loved ballet when I was younger, still do. Now that I'm older I'm looking to get back to things I loved to do, I really miss it. As another person commented it's great you stayed committed. Can't wait to get started again.

I probably could, but I went to college for Finance, so trying to get a job within my degree. I work right now in a clothing store. I may not get my ballet kick right now, but I'm getting my fashion kick styling other people :)

Let me know how the tips help!
