Friday Fashion Feature - White

6.07.2013

White on white on white on... You know where I'm going with this. Nothing screams Summer 2013 like an all white outfit. It's clean, it's simple, and perfect to wear on scorching hot summer days. Unless however you're a mom of young children. Three words...Tide To Go!! Keep it handy.
How to wear this trend without looking like an ice cream vendor? Just add a splash of anything other than white. Funky shade of shoes, a bright coloured bag, metallic touches, etc. If you're wearing head to toe white, you can play around with textures. For instance, wearing a white cotton tee with a white crochet skirt.
Here are street style examples of how to wear this all white trend.

summer outfit under $100

6.06.2013

You have a mortgage. Rent is due. You need groceries. Can't live without utilities. Car payment. Gas (and we all know that's not cheap)! Bills! BILLS!! And as our parents used to say, and yes now I say it too..."Money does not grow on trees". Actually it does, it's paper. *cue crickets chirping*
I run a fashion blog however my priorities are my family and my home and last comes clothing. Which is why spending the budget I have set for the month on 1 piece absolutely doesn't make any sense to me. I need to stretch my dollar to the flat out maximum.
With that being said, here's an ideal summer outfit for under $100!
Rompers are always big during summertime. They're easy to wear and super comfy. A denim vest is good all year round. A cool layering piece. A must-have in your closet. Flat sandals with a metallic touch that gives them that extra oomph. And a bright red bag, with trendy stripes none the less, to give your outfit a nice pop.
crochet romper: Forever 21
denim vest: Target
bag: Ardene (2/$20, so you can get yourself another bag and save $8.50)
sandals: Ardene (BOGO, buy one pair of sandals and get the other at 50% off)

thrift shop

6.05.2013

So I finally found myself a decent pair of denim overalls. Work had to be done like tapering the wide leg a tad, distressing the denim at the knees and around the pockets to give the worn in look, and hemming the bottom to avoid having such a huge cuff when rolled. Didn't take too much time but wouldn't have mattered anyway seeing as I paid these $5.99!!! Ok, you can pick up your jaw from the floor now :) The top I'm wearing is also from the same thrift shop and was a mere $2.99. It was a t-shirt which I just cut off the sleeves and sewed a hem to make neat.
You see, no need to spend a fortune to stay on trend. Just follow these simple guidelines for shopping at thrift stores.

  • Bring cash. Many thrift stores don't take credit/debit.
  • As a mom, here's the most important tip...Keep the kiddos at home!! Thrift shopping takes time and patience to sift through rows and rows of sardine packed racks.
  • Bring a list or pictures of what you're looking for so you don't aimlessly waist your time searching through racks and buying things that you'll never wear.
  • Keep an open mind and don't look for a specific piece. Think creatively. You want a sleeveless blazer but can't find one anywhere? Buy a regular blazer and cut off the sleeves.
  • Don't limit yourself. Shop the mens section as well. My t-shirt now tank top was found in the mens section size small.
  • Try it on! Bigger is always better as you can have it taken in.
  • Examine the piece carefully for unwanted rips, holes, stains,
  • Wash the pieces before wearing. Was not sure if I should write this for obvious reasons but you never know. Ewe!
  • Go often! Don't get discouraged if you don't find what you're looking for. Some stores get new items daily. Ask them how often and which days they receive merchandise.

And there are my tips for a successful thrift store shopping trip.
Do you guys have any tips to share?
