Why do I take supplements?

11.08.2016

As a bikini competitor in the bodybuilding industry, I often get asked, "Why do you take supplements?"
My answer: Supplements make it much easier to get the necessary nutrients to build muscle and can even give you an advantage and enhance your training when taken right and combined with a good diet.

My current stack (supplements I use on a daily basis) is from ATP because they carry products that are pure, effective and of highest quality.

New Zealand Whey Protein Powder in Chocolate Truffle: Its high biological value allows for complete absorption and encourages muscular and immune system recovery. Free of hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, gluten, GMO's and artificial colours.

IBCAA in Raspberry flavour: For muscle recovery and boosts protein. Increases energy, muscle mass and enhances recovery.

Glutamed: The highest combination of glutamine and glycine. Glutamine is the most important component of muscle protein, and helps repair and build muscle. Glycine is one of 20 amino acids used to make protein in the body, which builds the tissue that forms organs, joints and muscles.

And for all you ladies out there:

Estro Control: Helps promote healthy estrogen metabolism/balance, detox your body, reduce cellulite, stimulate weight loss (especially in the lower limbs), increase energy, and enhance libido.

I have not yet begun prepping yet for my next show, so my stack is pretty basic however I will keep you posted on everything I use throughout my journey to the National stage in 2017.

Genuine Health x Quality Rivets

8.02.2016

Do you suffer from headaches, back pain and muscle aches? I know I do!
  • As a bodybuilder, I train hard at the gym.
  • I work 8hr days sitting in front of a computer.
  • I have a lot of tension in my shoulders.
All of the above subjects me to muscle pains, back aches, and headaches. Therefore I was extremely happy when contacted to try out Genuine Health’s all-natural, powerful pain relief line which features three fast-acting formulas – FAST arthritis pain relief+, FAST joint care+, and FAST pain relief+.
The key ingredient in all 3 formulas is BiovaFlex natural eggshell membrane – the most potent form of research-proven eggshell membrane that relieves pain, decreases inflammation and helps to nourish and repair damaged joint tissue – with results in only 5 days! There is no other ingredient like it on the market!
Users of Genuine Health’s formula are 5X more likely to experience a 50% reduction in pain vs. glucosamine, and 3X more likely to experience a 50% reduction in pain vs. a leading Rx drug for joint pain.
I didn’t believe it at first but let me tell you, it works! I have been taking the FAST pain relief+ for a week now and my chronic shoulder pain and headaches have reduced by at least 70%. I am not kidding. I take these pills as suggested on package, 3x/day. And I love that the product is all natural, gluten-free, non-GMO and soy free.
I highly recommend giving these products a try if you suffer as I did. Did being the operative word here J

yes...leggings can be worn as pants!

12.02.2015

If you follow my Instagram, you'll know that I work out. I love it. I'm a gym rat. I've got swolemates. Insert annoying fitness terms here!
I own more workout clothes than I do underwear. And yes, I do own more than the M/T/W/T/F/S/S underwear weekly pack.
But the leggings that really hold my s**t together are from Fabletics. I kid you not, the fabric is thick enough to suck everything in but thin enough to actually be able to train in. They are not see-through, they are breathable, and they CAN be worn as pants! And the prints/designs are friggin awesome. BONUS: prices are pretty decent compared to competitors.
It's the Holidays, make yourself a Fabletics wish list or just treat yourself to a pair, or two at their prices.

Fitness and Nutrition Q&A

8.17.2015

Me in August 2015

A while back, I sat down with an old friend of mine Linda Sproull who just so happens to be a personal trainer, to pick her brain a little. Here's a little Q&A which I wish to do on a monthly basis because I don't know about you but I constantly have questions about workouts, diets, my body, etc.

1. How often should you work-out?
That depends on what your goals are. General health is 2x/week. To see a difference you should train 3x/week, while 4-5x/week will give you best results.

2. Lifting weights or interval training (HIIT)?
Both are great. Ideally you should incorporate both into your training week. Lifting weights builds muscle which you need to do in order to raise your metabolism among other benefits. HIIT is fantastic and an effective way to get the best bang for your buck. Skip cardio on HIIT days!

3. How long before you start seeing results? And if you don't see any, what could you be doing wrong?
You'll start to feel results almost immediately: increased well being, better sleep, better able to cope with stress, to name a few. Visible results take longer and are dependant on our eating habits. If you don't address a bad diet...no amount of training and cardio will change your body. You just can't outtrain a bad diet.

4. What's the best way to get rid of pesky belly fat?
Watch what you put in your mouth after 5pm. Cut sugar and refined carbs in all its forms: bread, cheese, and alcohol are big culprits that most people are in denial about.

5. Cardio first or weight training first?
No research supports that doing one before the other is better. Start with the one that you don't like first, or the one that you want to focus on first.

6. What is the difference between weight machines and free weights?
Weight machines are great to teach newbies proper form. Otherwise ditch the machines and use free weights which are more functional by design and will recruit more muscles especially in the core.

7. Nutrition is extremely important in helping you achieve your goals. Can you share a meal plan for someone who wants to begin eating clean?
Make sure that you include lean protein in all 3 of your meals. Include green veggies in at least 3 meals. Complex carbs at breakfast and lunch only. Pay attention and include fiber in your food. Cut out refined sugars and carbs. 8 glasses of water per day minimum.

8. How often should I do cardio?
For health reasons you should include at least 15-20 minutes of cardio in your daily lifestyle. Buy yourself a pedometer and shoot for 10,000 steps a day if you can't get in a brisk walk.

9. What should I eat before and after a workout?
This is when your body is looking for protein to rebuild muscle and it's the optimal time to eat carbs as they will not be stored. Earn your starchy carbs and eat them after you train.

10. What is your opinion on detox drinks, juicing or replacing meals with smoothies?
The body is always detoxing naturally. Juicing and shakes should be supplemental and should never replace real food.

11. Why is it important to stretch after a work-out?
To return the muscle fibers to their pre-workout length. Also muscles are warm and will respond well to stretching. Never stretch before you train and never before you are warm.

12. Is it ok to have a cheat day?
Cheat day, no. Two cheat items in a week is a good rule of thumb if you're trying to lose fat. Otherwise a cheat day can set you back on all your hard work for the week. Don't fall into that trap.

pins I'm currently loving

5.29.2014

Yes, ladies, the dreaded bikini season is here. Unless you live in Montreal, then in that case, it's near. (insert swear words here!)
So I decided to make this edition's "pins I'm currently loving" all about clean eating and effective home workouts. Because let's face it, we all want to strut our stuff in that itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini.

We all snack! However instead of going for a chocolate bar or anything else not good for you, save it for your cheat day and snack on these goodies for the rest of the week. They're healthier.

I've tried this and it works! It claims you can lose up to 10lbs in a week. I didn't weigh myself however after completing this diet, my husband actually noticed that my belly was flatter. This also put me on the right track to a healthier way of eating which I am noticing makes the biggest change. I train the same way but modifying my eating habits made all the difference in the way I look...and feel.

Portion control. A must if you jump on the clean eating band wagon. The best way to lose weight and maintain it.

Let's face it, we don't all have the luxury to spend every day inside a gym. Here are great exercises that you can do at home where all you need is your body weight. Believe it, you'll feel it! The more rounds you do, the better. I dare you to make it to 3 rounds :)

We need water, we don't all drink enough as we should. Or at least I know I don't. This picture is a gallon of water which might be too much because apparently you're supposed to drink half of your weight in ounces of water. I just thought it was a cool DIY to keep track of what you drink. Use the bottle that you need and mark the times.

As a busy working mom of 2 and wife, I find it difficult to get to the gym. I am always on the lookout for training programs that allow me to work from home because I can only make it to the gym 2 days a week and for me, working out for only 2 days is just not enough.

I came across this program that calls for 5 days a week of training, 3 of which I'm able to do at home. Perfect! And the best part is that each day is no longer than 90 minutes (including cardio). Click on exercises for tutorial on the proper technique.

By doing this workout and eating healthy, not super healthy but healthier than normal, I managed to lose 1" all over in a matter of 2 weeks. WOHOO!! I could lose more however some of my bad eating habits are hard to break (:
Now the hard part is trying to gain this back in muscle!

namaste

6.26.2013

If you follow me on Instagram, you'll know that I've recently added Yoga to my workout routine which consists of:

- running 4k/week
- weight training 2x/week
(I had to quit ballet due to an ongoing neck/spine pain. When you can't function your neck to it's maximum, pirouetting is not the greatest!)

I decided to replace my ballet void with yoga and I feel wonderful. I notice a huge change in my body, my flexibility, and my lifestyle all together. I'm much more relaxed and less stressed.

Here are 10 reasons why you should take up yoga if you're not already:

1. The long deep breathing also known as "Breath of Fire", oxygenates and purifies the bloodstream thus helping the body detoxify itself, stimulates energy flows in the body, builds lung capacity and helps purify the respiratory system, synchronizes your entire system under one rhythm promoting greater internal harmony and health, and it balances and strengthens the nervous system.

2. It's a great stress reliever. Just a few minutes of yoga a day can get rid of daily accumulated stress and anxiety in both mind and body.

3. Improves fitness. By practicing yoga regularly, it'll ameliorate your balance, flexibility, range of motion, and strength. It stretches and tones the muscles, making them strong. It improves your posture when you stand, walk, and sleep. The deep stretching lengthens sore, achy and tired muscles.

4. It's the number one exercise to boost your sexual drive. The yoga breathes and postures create body awareness. The more in-tune you are with your body, the more confident you'll feel about your ability to please. It clears your mind for a deeper understanding of you and your partners needs and desires. Studies say that it revs up your libido. I also don't need to tell you the creative positions you can achieve by being more flexible :) It increases blood flow to your pelvis which heightens sensitivity and increases desire. It strengthens the muscles around the woman's pelvis which makes for stronger contractions and more intense orgasms.

You should be sold on number 4 alone but I'll go on.

5. Weight reduction. Yoga practices that reduce anxiety tend to reduce the anxious eating. In addition, yoga deep breathing increases the oxygen intake to the body cells, including the fat cells. This causes increased oxidation or burning up of fat cells. Yogic exercises induce more continuous and deeper breathing which gradually burns, sometimes forcefully, many of the calories already ingested. Aside from burning calories and strengthening your muscles, yoga also helps you focus on having mind and body awareness. When you bring your attention inward, you may notice a shift in your perspective about how you treat your body and what you put into it as fuel. Doing yoga regularly can inspire you to take care of yourself as you become more aware of your physical and mental states.
6. Better sleep. Researchers found that doing a 45 minutes yoga practice before sleep helps many people relax and unwind. Ditch being a couch potato and opt for yoga instead! It is a known that lack of sleep, and disrupted sleep, is also associated with obesity. Extensive research shows under-sleeping is linked to weight gain and the diseases associated with obesity.
7. A sunnier outlook on life. There really is something to the "happy yogi." Studies show that doing one hour of asanas (a sequence of standing, sitting and balancing poses) helped avid posers raise their levels of the brain chemical GABA (low levels are linked with depression) by 27 percent compared with a group who read quietly.
8. Boosts your confidence. Doing yoga will give you an increased awareness of your body and over time leads to greater self-confidence.
9. Better skin. I’m sure you’ve heard the term “yoga glow”? Ever wonder if this is a popular myth or if there’s any truth to such a claim? The benefits of yoga for the skin are documented in Hinduism’s ancient history.  Let’s deconstruct the key elements: breath, movement, sweating and blood flow.  Yoga students take deep full rhythmic cleansing breathes or pranayama.  This oxygenates the blood flowing to our face and skin.  Oxygen fights free radicals and increases cell renewal. Inversions in particular can flush nutrients into the face and even stimulate the master glands of our endocrine system. Sweating in challenging asana sequences can purify the body removing toxins and release natural oils that help maintain the skin’s elasticity. Remember the calm face of a Buddha head statue? It seems that he was always glowing.  Yoga can also eliminate stress; it’s ideal for anyone who works long hectic hours.  When we are one with our breath, engaging in a yogic meditative flow we can detach from our mind accessing inner peace….and then we glow.
 10. Better relationships. Yoga can even help improve your relationship with your spouse, parents, friends or loved ones! A mind that is relaxed, happy and contented is better able to deal with sensitive relationship matters. Yoga and meditation work on keeping the mind happy and peaceful; benefit from the strengthened special bond you share with people close to you.

Yoga doesn't take time, it gives time! So come-on people, everyone can do it. Get off your asses and Namaste!

yoga

2.07.2013

A few years ago, I used to do yoga about 2-3 times a week and I'm not really sure why I stopped. It gave me more strength, flexibility, and my posture was better. I now go to the gym twice a week and do ballet twice a week however I really miss my yoga and I'm quite positive that I can fit an hour a week or more into my schedule.
I began my first session at home last night right before bed. I was pumped and let me tell you, it was probably the best sleep I had in a while! What I had never done before and incorporated some in yesterday's jam were some beginner arm balances. WHOA!!! I thought my face was going to plant into the ground a few times. But I worked hard and pulled through.
My first arm balance: Crow Pose or Bakasana, which strengthens the arms, inner thighs and abdomen. It improves your balance and builds focus. All of which I so desperately need :)
Follow me in my journey of yoga for beginner/intermediate. I will post my progression every once and a while, will do my best for once a week.
